Healing Touch refers to a group of energy healing techniques, including Therapeutic Touch, developed by prominent healers from around the world. These techniques were put together by Janet Mentgen, RN, BSN, into an organized program through which they could be taught to practitioners.

Healing Touch as an energy therapy is a valuable complement or adjunct to use in combination with other modalities when working with healing the mind-body-emotion-spirit connection. It is particularly useful in conjunction with counseling to promote accelerated movement toward release of old patterns and limitations resulting in frustration, depression, sadness, and anxiety. Because Healing Touch does not have to involve talking, it is particularly useful with persons who are not highly verbal, who are not comfortable with talking or who rely primarily on skillful use of words but have difficulty accessing emotions. It also can be taught to clients and family members as a way to continue the healing process outside sessions, thus emphasizing that the client is in charge of his/her own healing process.

Healing Touch is a contemporary healing modality based on the fundamental assumption that there is a universal life energy that sustains all living things. Life events and interactions cause disruption in the individual's energy field that can affect the smooth functioning of the mind-body-emotion-spirit In disease/distress the flow of energy is depleted or obstructed. Healing Touch refers to the practice of working with the energy field around the body to smooth and clear the field, repatterning and realigning the client's energy to promote higher levels of functioning. Energy healing techniques are used to induce a state of deep relaxation which allows for an expansion and balancing of the energy field, thus promoting healing - movement toward health, harmony and wholeness.

Healing Touch is performed by a trained practitioner while the client is fully clothed and either lying on a comfortable table of sitting in a chair. The practitioner follows a sequence of techniques which is determined by an assessment of the energy field and intuition, and which relates to the client's unique health needs. They may involve working in the energy space surrounding the body or lightly touching the body. The client will likely experience a comfortable state of relaxation, may have sensations of warmth or tingling and may even drift into sleep. Changes in physical or emotional states can occur hours or even days following a treatment.

Healing Touch is a safe and effective treatment for people with a wide variety of health concerns. However, the client is advised not to consider the therapy a substitute for health car by a physician. If, in the course of a treatment, an unaddressed medical problem is suspected, the client will be referred to a physician for further assessment and treatment.

Research and anecdotal evidence support the use of Healing Touch for many conditions. Examples:

Wounds Healing From Trauma And Surgery Headaches-Both Acute And Chronic Pre- And Post- Chemotherapy Acute And Chronic Anxiety Back And Neck Conditions Pre- And Post- Surgery Spiritual Reconnection Menstrual Disorders Chronic Conditions Emotional Wounds Viral Illness Arthritis Grief

People typically experience the following responses to Healing Touch:

  • Relaxation
  • Pain Reduction
  • Decrease In Depression/Anxiety
  • Increased Sense Of Well Being
  • Acceleration Of The Healing Process
  • Strengthening Of The Immune System

The practitioner supports and facilitates the client's own healing process with learned techniques, skill, intuition, a compassionate heart and sensitive hands, allowing the client to recover his/her own power and health. True healing comes from within the individual client.
